How to Switch2018-03-23T14:45:04+00:00

Switch to 100% Renewable Electricity – by State

Three simple steps:

  • 1. See if you live in an eligible state.  If you live in one of the following deregulated states, you can likely choose your power suppliers and switch to 100% renewable electricity: CA, CT, DC, DE, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TX, VA.

  • 2. Find a good renewable energy company in your state.  Renewable energy companies are leading the charge in the United States. Many have socially responsible missions to make a positive impact on society, workers, the community and the environment. Most make the switch easy and bill and deliver through your current utility.

  • 3.  Make the switch!

Big Switch has teamed up with some of the best, most ethical renewable energy companies in the climate fight.

We endorse CleanChoice Energy because they are doing real good for our environment and the planet. They are a Certified B-Corp and have been recognized as Best for the World 4 years running, including being recognized as “Best for the Environment” and “Best for Workers”.

Below is a listing by Deregulated state if you want more information for each state and our recommendations.

Find renewable electricity in your state

California

In California most municipalities offer renewable options through their current utility.

Alternatively, Community Choice Energy(CCE) organizations have been paving the path to renewable energy in California. These CCEs are local, non-for profit, public agencies that can purchase and better control the energy mix for their communities.  More CCEs are coming online in California so check back for updates.  Here is a list of the current CCEs offering renewable electricity.

San Mateo County – Peninsula Clean Energy

Marin & Napa Counties – Marin Clean Energy

San Francisco – Clean Power SF

Sonoma & Mendocino Counties – Sonoma Clean Power

San Jose and Surrounding Areas – Silicon Valley Clean Energy

Los Angeles County – Lancaster Choice Energy

Connecticut

Energize Connecticut offers a great tool to search and purchase renewables online.

Be sure to evaluate the companies thoroughly.  Look into their reviews, energy mix, ties to fossil fuels, whether or not they have a environmental stewardship mandate and if they will bill through your current utility.

 Maine

Maine’s public utility commission(MPUC) offers options to purchase renewable electricity for your household.

They also publish a specific Green Power site for more information here: Maine Green Power.

Michigan

Michigan has a deregulated electricity market, however, past legislation has limited the amount of renewables that can be sold to 10% of the total output of the given utility.

This cap has been reached in the state and until legislation either raises this cap or removes it, there is limited room for households to opt up to renewables.  In the medium term, if you are a Michigan resident and want renewable electricity, you can be more active in supporting green legislation to increase or remove this cap.

Here is a link to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.  This page shows the 6 utilities in Michigan and if there is any renewable energy to purchase.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission offers a good reference page for sourcing competitive energy suppliers.

Be sure to evaluate the companies thoroughly.  Look into their reviews, energy mix, ties to fossil fuels, whether or not they have a environmental stewardship mandate and if they will bill through your current utility.

Our suggestions are to research online with a few search strings below to get you started:

Google: Texas residential renewable electricity

Google: Switch to residential renewable electricity in Texas

Virginia

Virginia has a deregulated electricity market, but is still working out legislative issues around allowing new companies to sell renewable energy to households in the state. The two largest utilities in the state do offer some green options, so check with your current utility.  As time passes there should be more concrete development regarding alternative availability of renewable energy in Virginia.  You can read more in this article: Utilities continue to push back against retail choice in Virginia

note** In compiling this list we selected companies based on some of the most common concerns:   Can I keep my same utility bill? Is the company socially responsible? Does the company have ties to fossil fuels? Does the company have fair labor and wage practices? Does the company ultimately benefit the community and the planet?

Is your state not on the list? Take action here.

  • If you live in a regulated state  – The bad news is your stuck with your utility as your only power supplier.  The good news is that your current utility may offer some renewable electricity plans. You can make a significant difference by supporting renewable electricity in your state by making the switch under your current utility.  So grab your bill and call them: Tell them these exact words “I want to switch my electricity supply to the highest percentage of renewable sources you can offer me”. Don’t get confused by considering your gas supply, stay focused on Electricity.
  •  If you checked and cannot switch at all but want to act right now, you can purchase what are called Renewable Energy Credits.  This is a national program in which you make a payment to purchase a portion of renewable electricity.  This does not impact your utility bill in any way, but the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits is a payment very much like carbon offset purchases.  When you purchase an amount of Renewable Energy Credits, it guarantees that that much green electricity will be used in place of fossil fuel.
  • Act in the Medium Term – Get Political – Ask yourself, “why doesn’t my state or area offer deregulated electricity?”  If you want to make a mid-term impact, become more aware of your local and state’s legislation goals, and use your power as a citizen to support political officials who will bring green legislation to your area. Consumer choice is a fundamental principle of our free market economy, so ultimately restriction of this freedom to choose should be questioned.

If you run into roadblocks, do not give up, be tenacious and determined and don’t stop until you have made the big switch.  In some areas renewable electricity is not available, but these areas are continually shrinking so check back.  We do not have all the answers, but hope the information on our website and the above list will get you there.  Join us and use the power of your pocketbook to fight for a cleaner and better future.
